KTMU Faculty Member Serkan Yıldırım Achieves World Second Place in Veterinary Pathology

  • 2026-09-24

Prof. Dr. Serkan Yıldırım, a faculty member at the Veterinary Medicine Faculty  91×ÔÅÄ (KTMU), ranked second in the world in veterinary pathology in the five-year evaluation published by AD Scientific Index. In the overall global ranking for the same research field, he placed 15th.

Evaluations Are Based on Scientific Publications and Citations

AD Scientific Index evaluates researchers' citations and citation-based performance indicators using data from Google Scholar. The system creates separate rankings for the h-index, i10-index, and total citation count, covering both the entire academic career and the most recent five-year period.

The h-index considers a researcher's number of publications together with the citations those publications receive. For example, an h-index of 20 means the researcher has at least 20 publications, each cited at least 20 times. The i10-index counts publications with at least 10 citations, while the total citation count reflects how widely the studies are referenced in the scientific literature. These indicators are evaluated separately rather than being merged into a single composite score.

Rank Reflects the Citation-Based Impact of Research

Achieving a top position in these rankings indicates that a researcher's work stands out among the researchers included in the system, based on the indicator and evaluation period in question. The five-year results reflect recent citation-based performance, while the overall rankings reflect the accumulation of work over an entire academic career.

In this context, Yıldırım's ranking is considered an indicator of the visibility and citation-based impact of his work in veterinary pathology. The scope of the ranking is limited to the indicator used, the time period, and the researchers included in the index. Activities such as teaching, clinical practice, and social contribution require different evaluation criteria.

"We Support Scientific Production with Research Infrastructure and Financial Assistance"

KTMU Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan congratulated Prof. Dr. Serkan Yıldırım on his achievement and stated that the result is an encouraging example for the university's academic community. Ceylan emphasized that researchers' efforts and sustained academic work are decisive in gaining international recognition for scientific studies, and that the university places importance on developing institutional resources that support high-quality research.

Ceylan stated that the university has strengthened its research infrastructure and increased financial support for scientific research. He noted that the university aims to turn the resources it provides into original projects, quality publications, and international research collaborations. He also highlighted the importance of directing research resources toward work that contributes to scientific knowledge and addresses social needs.

Ceylan emphasized that improving high-quality scientific production is a shared academic responsibility. He said the university values all faculty members conducting research in their areas of expertise, developing joint work with colleagues from different disciplines, and participating in international scientific networks. He added that these efforts will permanently strengthen the university's research capacity and scientific visibility.
